Photographs accompanying Episode One: The Haunted Pound Stretcher

Below are a series of photographs in or of the old Pound Stretcher building or it’s current use as Jones’ coffee shop and gym that accompany episode one of the podcast Weird in the Wade.

A close up of a coffee cup with froth on the top. there is a saucer with spoon and small biscuit on the side. There is an open window behind the table and a red pink jacket over a chair. The view outside is to a wet street with red brick buildings.
Coffee upstairs in the coffee lounge, what would have been the office or storeroom area.
A close up of a sash window with an old frame and catches. The view from the window is of traffic lights, a wet street and road and red bricked buildings.
The window which had previously been boarded up.
The outside of Pound Stretchers. The building is lower than its neighbours with a brown roof and cream walls. There are three spaces for windows upstairs but the furthers window is boarded over and also painted cream. The sign for the shop is bright orange and yellow and there are plastic pots stacked outside the shop. There is a traffic lights, railings and bench and bin outside the shop. A person with their face blurred out is walking past.

A fireplace and brick wall with a large clock with roman numerals and Jones' written on it is to the right. To the left there is a table and bench and a window with light flooding through it.
Upstairs in the coffee lounge again this would have been the office or store room area.
A view of a wooden table and comfy chairs in front of a window. There are plants either side of the window and fairy lights hanging from the wall.
Upstairs in the coffee lounge today. It serves great coffee and food.

  1. It’s weird how this podcast found its way into My Sounds on the BBC Sounds app. I’d never heard of it although I’m really glad it’s there. I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode…The Haunted Poundstretcher. I like Natalie’s voice and easy presenting style. Looking forward to listening to the rest of the podcasts.

  2. Amazing! you popped up this week on BBC sounds. I grew up in Sandy and have been in that Poundstretcher which was always such a crowded jumble of stuff. Looking forward to working through the back catalogue of episodes and delighted to see Bedfordshire celebrated nationally. Yes, it’s not Home Counties, east anglia or the midlands but it’s a great place to be.

  3. Hi Nat, great podcast. i know you must get this all the time, but I grew up in Biggleswade in the 70’s-80’s, and our house was haunted, both me and my brother saw it, and people who knew the house would say ‘oh, you’ve seen it then.’
