Book Reviews

I’ve been trying to read more lately, since having covid in March 2020 I’ve found it hard to concentrate enough to read books, unless it’s for work or podcast. Yet I’ve always been a book worm. I’ve never been a fast reader but I always had my nose in a book or my headphones on listening to an audio book. I love both and yet I’ve found it hard to concentrate fully until recently…

Recently I’ve been able to concentrate more on books and so I thought it might be a nice idea to share some of my recommendations in the spooky and history genre with my Weird in the Wade listeners.

I’d love to hear about your favourite ghost stories, horror fiction, history and anything spooky. The kind of books you can’t put down. Here are the two most recent books I’ve read which I whole heartedly recommend.

Hidden Haunts: Scotland by W.J. Gilbert

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’m a huge fan of W J Gilbert’s Eerie Edinburgh YouTube videos and podcast, so was eagerly awaiting his book. And it did not disappoint. This collection of lesser known ghost stories from Edinburgh and beyond is a rich and dark brew. Perfect reading on dark stormy nights.
I particularly love the historical context given for many of the stories and the mix of story telling and first person accounts.
This really is a fantastic collection of ghost stories to scare you and to also make you wonder, and most of all it made me want to visit and explore Scotland further.

Boys in the Valley by Philip Fracassi

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was looking for a good old fashioned kind of horror story, in the best sense of old fashioned. Something genuinely creepy and disturbing with a lot of atmosphere. And Boys in the Valley delivered. It has the perfect creepy and atmospheric setting, an orphanage run by priests out in the wilds of nowhere in late 19th century America. It has creepy children in bucket loads! Yes there is gore and violence but also a good old dollop of scariness and tension built by the awful creepiness and eeriness of the setting and the characters. I cared about the characters and I was rooting for the good guys. I definitely recommend this book.
